This week were jumping back to September 15, 2001. and on this day for many people it was just starting to sink in that September 11 had actually occurred, two days earlier (RIP to all the lives lost 17 years ago). Jay-Z dropped The Blueprint (this week), Denzel Washington was gearing up to do press run for, his Oscar winning movie, Training Day and surprisingly Friends was still on air.

Kicking off the Top 5 Throwback Hits according to Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop/R&B Songs Chart is:

JAY-Z: On September 15, 2001 Jay-Z rounded out the top 5 hits on Billboard’s Top Hip Hop/R&B Songs Chart with his hit IZZO. Fpr all you kids out there this is Jay-Z before Beyonce, the Jay-Z that made Annie’s theme song cool and if you’ve never heard the Blueprint album go listen to it NOW!

ALICIA KEYS: If you love H.E.R you need to thank Alicia Keys, who happens to be one of her idols and biggest supporters. Before 2001 most of the world didn’t even know that this bad a$$ piano player/song writer/vocalist even existed. On a personal note I got to see here in concert after her second album, Diary, released and I cried when the show was over (confession: I’m an overly sensitive soul). Here is Alicia Keys coming in #4 with her debut song Fallin’.

(peep how simple this video was.)

MARY J BLIGE: After taking an hiatus from the music industry to deal with her drug abuse problem, Mary J Blige came back with a vengeance and little more swag. Ever wonder why we make fun of Mary J’s dancing? This video should show you everything you need to know. Also, I believe you’re not having a good time unless you hit one Mary J Blige kick while you’re dancing. Here is Mary J Blige getting crunk in the #3 spot with Family Affair.

J.LO: J.Lo and Ja Rule had an amazing run during the early 2000’s. J. Lo had a clothing line, perfume (that smelled bomb), a budding acting career and dated Diddy (for a very short time) but the younger me wanted them to get back together soooo bad (lol).  Now she’s dating A-Rod and performing this song with a little latin feel to it. Here is J.Lo and Ja Rule with the #2 song I’m Real.

Jagged Edge: The early 2000’s should have been known as the Jagged Edge era because almost ever song they put out or was featured on was hit! Here they are with the #1 song from September 15, 2001 with Where the Party At featuring, St. Louis’s own, Nelly.  This song can still get any party hype!
