Wow! How does it make you feel to know that St. Louis is one of THE most dangerous cities– not only in the United States– but in the world?

In 2017, St. Louis had a population of 311,404 people and 205 homicides, which lands the “Show Me State” at no. 2 most dangerous city in the United States. (Detroit is no. 1)Attempting to put things in context, St. Louis has a poverty rate of  27.1% and an unemployment rate of 5.4% according to the 2016 FBI’s 2016 Uniform Crime Report. There were 60 homicides per 100,000 St. Louis residents in 2016. More than 10 times the national homicide rate!

So why is St. Louis homicide rate so high where other, major metropolitan areas have leveled off? It is suspected that it’s because of Missouri’s relatively lax gun control legislation. People here are allowed to carry a gun in a car without a permit, which is something totally illegal in Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, and New York City state laws.
