Controversial Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke resigned from his post on Thursday afternoon, a position he held for over two years amidst a 40-year career in law enforcement.

According to The New York Times, Clarke submitted his resignation letter at 3:16 p.m. Milwaukee time, which went into effect at the end of the day.

“After almost 40 years serving the great people of Milwaukee County, I have chosen to retire to pursue other opportunities,” Clarke wrote. “I will have news about my next steps in the very near future.”

Clarke, a vocal Trump supporter, rose to prominence during the presidential election cycle of 2016 after he proposed controversial tenants relating to race, gun control and the numerous high-profile police shootings of Black men and women. His 2016 Republican National Convention speech elevated his platform on a national level.

Like Trump, Clarke enjoyed creating social media firestorms and tweeted numerous controversial statements. In one tweet he alleged that members of Black Lives Matter would form alliances with ISIS to take down America. He also once called the Ferguson demonstrators “vultures on a roadside carcass.”

In early May, a Milwaukee grand jury recommended criminal charges against staff of a jail that was run by Clarke after an inmate died from “profound dehydration.” An investigation found that staffers shut off water in the inmate’s cell for a week as punishment for misbehavior.

Rumblings surrounding Clarke’s resignation heightened after he flirted with  taking a  senior position with the Department of Homeland Security during a May radio interview, weeks after the grand jury’s decision.
