The Church of The Flying Spaghetti Monster is a real thing and a woman in Massachusetts gets to wear a colander on her head in a government-issued photo as a result. (File that under “sentences I never thought I’d write in my life.”)
Listen, we’re all for religious freedom, but this is just hard to believe. So let’s talk about this mess for a second.
Lindsay Miller said she wears the colander on her head as an expression of her beliefs. She is a Pastafarian, a group that, according to Wikipedia, believes in a “light-hearted view of religion and oppose the teaching of intelligent design and creationism in public schools.”
The Pastafarian central belief is that an “invisible and undetectable Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe.”
So back in August, Miller attempted to renew her license with the strainer on her head. The state only allows head coverings or hats for religious purposes, and they initially denied her request.
She filed an appeal and was ultimately granted the right to wear the colander in the photo.
And now, here we are.
It’s really hard not to see Pastafarianism as an insult to traditional religion, especially in light of the fact that they came out in protest to the Kansas State Board of Education’s decision to teach Intelligent Design (essentially Creationism) as an alternative to evolution in public schools.
“We are not anti-religion,” its founder, Bobby Henderson, writes. “We are anti-crazy nonsense done in the name of religion. There is a big difference. Our ideal is to scrutinize ideas and actions but ignore general labels.”
Ok Beauties, I am dying to know what you think of this? Should she be able to practice religious freedom or is this a mockery?
