Chances are if you were a hip-hop fan in the ’90s, you were bound to know the following two names: Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito. Ask anyone from that era about them, and they will probably tell you about having cassette tapes with recordings of their radio show. Or perhaps tales about being up until 5 am listening to them, and how many artists first appeared on their show. Now the the duo aims to give back to fans by sharing the story behind their legendary college radio run.

A new documentary about their show has been finished and is using crowdfunding methods to fund its release. Called Stretch & Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives, it looks at the eight years the two DJs spent on the airwaves at WKCR 89.9 FM, or 89 Tec 9 as it was called by some. The show came to earn a special place in hip-hop history, perhaps most notably where Nas, Notorious BIG, Jay ZBig Pun and Big L made their radio debuts. Hip-hop fans will enjoy the stories in the documentary about some of the most famous appearances on the show, like the excitement the Wu-Tang Clan felt when “Protect Ya Neck” was first played and how a young Fugees group almost did not appear on their show. Having seen the doc, it features a lot of interviews with icons such as Common, RaekwonEminemAngie Martinez, Sway and Rosie Perez. Needless to say, it is a must see when it comes to your town.

To celebrate, the duo threw an anniversary concert in New York City on Sunday and screened the film for the first time in public. Those who attended the event were not only treated to the documentary, but a plethora of special hip-hop performances. The likes of Pharoahe Monch, KuriousSmoothe Da Hustler & Trigga Tha Gambler, Kool Keith, Brand Nubian, Large Professor, The Artifacts, Skillz and the D.I.T.C. crew came out to support the legendary duo. The two radio hosts also entertained fans with DJ sets, and X-Ecutioners member Rob Swift launched into some classic beat-juggling routines for the crowd. For anyone who’s an avid student of hip-hop, having that many verbal assassins in one place for anything is a rare thing.

Stretch & Bobbtio will hit the road next month to screen the documentary at select engagements. They have launched a Kickstarter to get the doc released at more theaters and also drop an original soundtrack. You can watch the trailer and donate to Stretch & Bobbito’s Kickstarter at this link.
