Although he’s busy preparing for the release of the forthcoming N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton, which is set to hit theaters on August 14, Ice Cube has still been keeping his ear to the street in terms of what’s going on in hip-hop.
During a recent interview with The Daily Beast, the Compton, Calif. rapper offered his take on the continuing feud between Drake and Meek Mill.
“Drake is winning right now,” Cube says. “But, you know… Meek could come back.”
As a pioneer of hip-hop diss records, Ice Cube says that the beef—which started after Meek Mill accused Drake of using ghostwriters—is taking hip-hop back to its core.
“It’s funny,” Cube says, with a grin. “To me it’s like going back to the essence of hip-hop: Who can rap the best? I don’t think anybody’s going to get jumped or get their asses whooped, but it’s fun to sit back and watch.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Ice Cube recalled his 1991 diss record, “No Vaseline.” The track was aimed at his former group N.W.A and is widely regarded as one of the best diss songs ever recorded on wax.
“Back then, we were angry and mad at each other,” Ice Cube recalled. “We had so many raw emotions right there on the surface. Diss records came out, and we got physical behind our diss records. There were fights and squabbles.”
Despite the track’s success, Ice Cube recalled a conversation he’d had with N.W.A member Eazy-E. The two agreed to keep the feud on wax in order to prevent the beef from flooding out on to the streets.
“At one point—and this isn’t in the movie—me and Eazy got on the phone after our feud,” Cube continues. “We were like, ‘We should just keep this on wax, no matter how mad we get and how much shit we talk. Let’s keep it on wax because once we take it to the streets it ain’t hip-hop no more. It’s gangbanging.’ We all fought to try to get out of the gangbang lifestyle and not have to deal with that every day. Why go back?”
