TLC is about to begin working on a new album funded by fans through Kickstarter. The project is set to be the group’s fifth and last album. Supporters, including Katy Perry, rushed to donate and over 4,200 donations were made. While their goal was $150,000, the group earned $430,255 when the fundraising ended yesterday.

Rob Fair, Ne-Yo and Dallas Austin are reportedly set to work on the album. The group’s also gearing up to hit the road with Nelly and New Kids On The Block for an interesting tour line-up, according to MissInfo.

This isn’t the first album that has been released under intriguing circumstances. Just this month, Drake surprised fans with the release of If You’re Reading This Its Too Late. Of course, Beyonce shocked the world with her own surprise self-titled drop in 2013.

Besides Kickstarter, artists have also used other means to release projects. Jay Z, for instance, used a Samsung app for the release of Magna Carta…Holy Grail. And who can forget last year’s U2 drop, Songs of Innocence, which came out on everybody’s iPhones. U2 had previously done an iPod release of How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, too. At the time, they dropped their discography on iPods, so this was nothing new.

TLC’s latest effort is also not the only interesting album release that has had fans paying extra for their music. Nipsey Hussle charged $100 for Crenshaw and then followed that up by charging $1,000 for Mailbox Money. Both efforts were also available for free. In 2007, Radiohead offered a “pay what you want” option for In Rainbows.

Looks like we’ll be getting even more unconventional releases in the near future as artists find new and creative ways to drop projects.
