Cathy Hughes Born Catherine Elizabeth Woods, Cathy Hughes attended Creighton University and the University of Nebraska at Omaha but did not graduate. Around 1969 she began working at KOWH, a black radio station in Omaha, handling various jobs, and becoming well known.

Her success prompted the School of Communications at Howard University in Washington, DC, to offer her a job as lecturer. In 1973 she became sales director at WHUR-FM. Two years later she became the station’s general manager, boosting sales revenue from $300,000 to $3.5 million.

In 1979, she and her husband, Dewey Hughes, purchased a small Washington radio station, WOL, creating Radio One. Her marriage eventually ended, and she bought her husband’s share in the station. But Hughes was forced to give up her apartment and live at the station for a time in order to make ends meet.

Over time, she made the station profitable, and her own talk show became a hit. By purchasing stations in other cities, the company eventually became the nation’s largest black-owned radio chain. She is the first African American woman to head a firm publicly traded on a stock exchange in the United States.

Last week, Oprah invited past contributor, Iyanla Vanzant to her show. The hour long chat between the two unraveled their last interaction that resulted in Vanzant leaving Harpo Productions. They also discussed her time starring in her own talk show with Executive Producer Barbara Walters.

It seems like our favorite shows and channels have painted a scary picture of black women that America is liking…Loud, Confrontational and Dramatic. Are we? And why when there’s 2 or more of us, its a big mess? Why is that?

The upcoming Donald Trump show, “Celebrity Apprentice” that premieres next month(March 6) features the female contestants LaToya Jackson, Star Jones and NeNe Leaks from the Real Housewives of Atlanta who happen to be black. There’s already some pre-hype from the show highlighting major drama and cattiness between Nene Leaks and former “View” host and attorney, Star Jones.

Both have gone on record and given their take on the feud. According to a recent AOL Black Voices interview with Jawn Murray, Ms. Jones commented on the situation.

She stated,

“This actually saddens me. Black women trashing other black women all for the sake of personal aggrandizement. When the cast was first announced, I was both excited and concerned. Excited that this was going to be the most diverse cast in prime-time reality programming and concerned because the media immediately started the drumroll of “can this many black women get along?” The four of us actually chatted about the unique opportunity we had to influence the perception of black women and the way we interact. We each brought something different to the show, so I had hoped we could avoid falling into the typical “snake charmer in your face loud bombastic black woman” stereotypical box that was expected. Some of us were more successful at our quest than others. I knew I wanted to approach the game intelligently, professionally and strategically, while keeping in mind my true purpose for being there – winning money for my charity.”

The Real Housewives reality star went on record during an interview with NBC’s Today Show and expressed her feelings towards Star and said,

“The whole sneaky, back stabbing, forming alliances, I just don’t like…she may have a new body, but she doesn’t have a new brain. You still think the same even though you lose weight so I don’t know.”

Was all of this necessary? No matter what side you’re on Team Star or Team Nene, it saddens me that the media got wind of another feud amongst two black women and revealed the negative side of them bickering. Could their disagreement and/or mis-communication been dealt with different? Privately?

Since coming on the scene a few years ago, it appears as if Mrs. Leaks likes Drama. But is she “keeping it real” or just making noise to get attention at any cost? We all know it takes two to tangle and three sides to every story but what’s your opinion on Star Jones vs. Nene Leaks? Is it Ego, Pride or just Disrespect between the two? What’s your thoughts? We’d love to hear what you think? Hit us back.

“You said that you’d been fasting,” Oprah recalls from their confrontation, “that you had prayed, that god had spoken to you and that god told you that ‘this is the anointed time, not the appointed time.’”

That phrase was tossed around several times during the interview — but never really explained. What is explained is how Vanzant’s ensuing series, “The Iyanla Show,” only lasted one season.

Inyanla is scheduled for part two of the interview on Wednesday.

As a single, busy woman living in New York City, sick wasn’t a part of my vocabulary when I entered the last year of my 20s. Nonetheless, it soon found its way into my life.

It began with a swollen toe joint, which I easily dismissed as a yoga injury. But when the swelling and pain persisted and began to spread to other parts of my body, I knew something was going wrong. After a series of visits with a primary care physician and a lot of blood work, the test results came back in the “strongly positive” category for rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes severe pain and swelling in the joints, along with a host of other fun symptoms like unshakable fatigue and fevers. As a lifelong overachiever, it was the one test I hadn’t wanted to score highly on.

The next six months of my life were probably some of the darkest, most painful ones I have known. I was not prepared for the onslaught of doctor and physical therapy appointments that came my way, or at how quickly my physical condition deteriorated. It had never occurred to me that I might have trouble washing my hair and dressing myself at the age of 29. But most of all, I was unprepared for the emotional fallout of finding out I had something incurable at such a young age. I felt like my life had only just begun, and yet, it felt like it was suddenly going to end horribly wrong.

Many of the books and resources I found at the time did nothing to dissuade these feelings of isolation and doom. Words like disabled and disfigured screamed out from every page, along with statistics about my increased chances for cancer and heart disease.

To top it all off, the advice and case studies seemed to be geared toward women twice my age and assumed that I was married. Suggestions like “having your husband help you carry the groceries” didn’t do me a whole lot of good, given that I was single and living on my own. My independence had been a source of pride for me, but it suddenly felt more like a liability. How was I supposed to get through this all by myself? Though my family was a wonderful support system, they lived far away, and when you are used to doing everything on your own, it’s difficult and humbling to ask friends to help with things like cleaning your bathroom or getting dressed.

What’s more, there was scant advice on issues that pertained to being young and single—and sick—such as navigating the dating world with a chronic illness and thinking further down the line to having a baby one day. How was having rheumatoid arthritis going to impact all the future decisions of my life?

That’s when I decided that if I wanted my story to be out there, and more importantly, if I wanted to find other young women who were facing the same tough reality about their health, I would have to do it myself.

Are you concerned about the health of your bones as you age? There are many treatments for bone conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis and other joint issues. Maybe the best way to treat those issues is to prevent them.

Here are some ways to get you started:

Work on those quads. Strengthening your thighs can reduce the amount of pain or stiffness in the knees.

Get your omega-3 fatty acids. The more fatty acids consumed, the better your bone mineral density.

Take in Vitamin D. Vitamin D assists your body in absorbing calcium, which in turn, allows your bones to stay strong.

Quit smoking. There is an increased risk of bone fracture in women who smoke.

Find time to exercise. The simple act of walking can strengthen your muscles, aid in weight loss and reduce the strain on your joints.

Sometimes those extra 10 minutes of sleep we get from hitting the snooze button in the morning are not enough. For years we have been told the adequate amount of sleep each person should get is 8 hours. Even if we are fortunate to get that amount of sleep, it may not be the type of sleep our bodies require. Our bodies need deep, restful sleep.

To get a better night’s rest you may want to avoid that glass of wine before going to bed. Yes, it can make you sleepy, but it may have you waking up in the middle of the night wondering why you are unable to go back to sleep.

Being able to breathe easily is also another way to ensure you get the proper sleep you need. Having clear passageways for air to move in and out is vital. For someone who has sleep apnea, breathing while asleep is difficult. “…[R]est your upper body at a 30-degree or greater incline, it may make a more direct path for air to move in and out of the lungs,” recommends Donna Arand, Ph.D., clinical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Kettering Medical Center in Kettering, Ohio.

Lastly, you may need to think about rescheduling your exercise routines. Your body becomes energized after you work out. It may take a few hours for your body to cool down and calm down before you are even able to get any shuteye. Mornings and afternoons are better parts of the day to schedule your work out.

I think we have all long known what John Gray put down in words in his bestseller, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: There are differences between the sexes, not just physically, but psychologically. And a new study being published in the May issue of Personality Individual Differences reinforces that belief.

Researchers at Brigham Young University set out to gauge hidden feelings about body image. They conducted psychological screenings of both men and women using brain imaging technology. MRI scans were employed to monitor the brain activity of the participants while they were shown computer-generated images of different body types. While viewing each image, the participants were asked to imagine that someone else was saying the model looked like them.

Not surprisingly, the images of overweight women triggered the self-reflection and identity processing area in the brain in only the female participants. The medial prefrontal cortex lit up in not just a few, but all of the women. Mark Allen, a neuroscientist at BYU said, “This is kind of validating the suspicion that most women are teetering on the edge of an eating disorder. If the brain response is so strong in these apparently healthy women, maybe most of us could use a little dose of what it is that you go through in an eating disorder therapy.”
