Byron Lars NYFW SS17

In the fashion industry, say the name Byron Lars and it’s synonymous with style, fit, and funky fashion flair. There are not many designers who can claim they dress the most powerful people in the world (hello, Michelle Obama), as well as some of our favorite stars, like Naturi Naughton. And not every designer can say they have a dress that has never gone on sale.

Monday evening at New York Fashion Week, Byron Lars proved to the fashion world that plus-size clothing is needed, fashionable, and flattering. Rather than creating a separate show, his was inclusive, with 22 models of all shapes and sizes.

As the models went down the runway, you saw diversity in looks, which was not only pleasing to the eye, but also relatable. I’m sure the CFDA will be pleased, as they have made an extra push with the help of model and activist Bethann Hardison for representation of women of color on the runway. Byron Lars told HelloBeautiful, “Our girl is represented through each of these looks and models on the runway.”

Olympic medalist winner Kristi Castlin traded in her running shoes for some heels, and sashayed down the runway, showing off her strong body in a floral and stripes Byron Lars Beauty Mark dress. The detailing of her dress, with red, white, and blue stripes on the sleeves, looked like high-end varsity meets modern-day style.

Our own Style & Beauty Editor, Danielle James, walked in the show. Wearing a gele with her dress and a pair of turquoise Converse All-Stars, this is very much a look Danielle would wear in between fashion appointments and running around NYC.

Byron Lars exclusively told HelloBeautiful, “I was inspired when Danielle arrived in my office last season in a tight-fitted dress and some sneakers. She was in her commuting shoes and apologized, but she looked great! Real.”

Sneakers and dresses continue to be popular, with the Obama daughters, Malia and Sasha, rocking this type of look on the regular. This is how a busy girl on the go does fashion:

Byron Lars is known for the fit of his clothes, making garments that hug a woman’s body in all the right places and accentuates her assets and minimizes any potential problem areas. The dress above may look like it’s just buttons, but there is a hidden zipper underneath. This detailing prevents puckering and pulling, often experienced on most clothes. Byron Lars is about the details.

Famous plus-size model pioneer Liris Crosse also walked in the show, taking a selfie at the end of the runway:

Not only was the runway star-studded, but so was the audience. Power star Naturi was spotted sitting front row and gushed about the collection, telling HelloBeautiful, “I just saw the most amazing, sexy, fashionable clothes!”

Journalist, image activist, and fashion expert Michaela Angela Davis also sat front row, commenting on her Instagram, “I only go to fashion shows that have something to SAY … I can look at cool clothes on the interwebs …”

Byron Lars is known for his pattern play, mixing patterns and colors one might think would mismatch, but truly form an iconic and memorable look when paired together. Mixing this, with well-fitted garments, truly creates statement dresses and pieces you will own for a lifetime.
