Singer and actress Jennifer Hudson took the stand this morning in the trial of William Balfour. Balfour is charged with murdering Hudson’s mother Darnell, big brother Jason and 7-year-old nephew Julian on October 24, 2008. Balfour was married to Jennifer’s sister Julie and allegedly he was upset that she had a new boyfriend and that led to the murders. Balfour has stated he is innocent and wasn’t even in the area when the crimes occurred. Today opening statements and witness testimony were heard with Jennifer taking the stand as the first witness. Jennifer appeared in court dressed in all black with her hair pulled back was said to have been soft-spoken with the judge having to tell her to speak up. Hudson said she spoke with her mom daily so when she woke on that faithful day and hadn’t heard from her she was a bit worried. Jennifer is said to have choked up and held back tears when she said “None of us wanted her to marry him, We did not like how he treated her,” referring to her sister Julie and Balfour relationship. The trial is could last up to a month, according to sources there are 300 potential witnesses.
